    * Causes (원인들)

    * Clarity (명쾌함)

    1. Unclear writing의 예시

    • Abstract: Verb를 사용하여 행동으로 표현해도 될 것을 동사를 명사화시킨 abstract nouns를 사용함.

    • Turgid: 과장되게 문장이 늘어나 있음.

    • Disjointed/Not flow: 끊어져야 하지 않아야 할 부분이 끊어져 있음. 시간 순서로 글이 흘러가지 않음.

    • Too technical: 너무 전문적임.

    Abstract

    Turgid

Decisions in regard to the administration of medication despite the inability of irrational patients voluntarily appearing in Trauma Centers to provide legal consent rest with a physicial alone.

When a patient voluntarily appears at a Trauma Center but behaves so irrationally that he cannot legally consent to treatment, only a physician can decide whether to administer medication.

    Disjointed

    Not flow

China, so that it could expand and widen its influence and importance among the Eastern European nations, in 1955 began in a quietly orchestrated way a diplomatic offensive directed against the Soviet Union.

In 1955, China began to orchestrate a quiet diplomatic offensive against the Soviet Union to expand its influence in Eastern Europe.

    Too technical

When pAD4038 in the E. coli pmmimanA mutant CD1 heterogously overexpressed the P. aeruginosa pmi gene, there appeared high levels of PMI and GMP activities that were detectable only when pAD4038 was present.

    2. Clear Writing

    Unclear

    Clear

Our lack of knowledge about local conditions precluded determination of committee action effectiveness in fund allocation to those areas in greates need of assistance

Because we knew nothing about local conditions, we could not determine how effectively the committee had allocated funds to areas that most needed assistance.

    Unclear

    Clear

An evaluation of the program by us will allow greater efficiency in service to clients

We will evaluate the program so that we can serve our clients better.

We can serve our clients efficiently by evaluating the program. (My edition)

    3. Subjects and Characters

    1) Collective agents, secondary or remote agents

    2) Figurative agents that stand for the real agents: The White House, the business sector, etc.

ex) Studies of coal production reveal these figures = When we study the coal production, we find these figures.

    4) 문장의 adjective(형용사)로 숨겨져 있을 수 있다.

ex) Medieval theological debates often addressed what to modern thought seems to be metaphysical triviality = Medieval theologist often debated issues that we might think were metaphisically trivial.

    Unclear

    Clear

The Federalists' belief that the instability of government was a consequence of popular democracy was based on their belief in the tendency on the part of factions to further their self-interest at the expense of the common good.

The Federalists believe that popular democracy destablized government because they believed that factions tended to further their self-interest at the expense of the common good.

    6) Indefinite subjects: we/one/....

    4. Verbs and Actions

    1) 동사는 어떠한 행동이 있었음을 표현하기보다는 행동 자체를 표현할 수 있어야 한다(not to state that an action exists but to express action).

There has been effective staff information dissemination control on the part of the Secretary -> The Secretary has effectively controlled how his staff disseminates information.

    Issue Solution Example

The police conducted an investigation into the matter.

-> The police investiaged the matter

There is (are) 구문 뒤에 norminalization이 나오는 경우

There was considerable erosion of the land from the floods.

-> The floods considerably eroded the land.

The intention of the IRS is to audit the records of the program.

-> The IRS intends to aduit the records of the program.

There was first a review of the evolution of the dorsal fin.

-> First, she reviewed the evolution of the dorsal fin.

-> First, she reviewed how the dorsal fin evolved.

The presence of extensive rust damage to exterior surfaces prevented immediate repairs to the hull.

-> Because the rust had extensively damaged the exterior surface, we could not repairs the hull immediately.

    • 이전 문장의 주어로 쓰일 때 ex) These arguments all depend on a single unproven claim.

    • 동사 자체가 대상이 될 때 ex) I do not understand either her meaning or his intention.

    • 문장이 더 간결해질 때 ex) My denial of his accusations (The fact that I denied what he accused me of) impressed the jury

    • 반복되는 개념 / 대체어가 없을 때 ex) The Equal Rights Amendment was an issue in past elections / freedom, death, love, hope, life, wisdom

    • There is/are 구문에서 다음에 소개될 개념으로 사용될 때

    3) Passive and Agents

ex) Patient movement to less restrictive methods of care may be followed by increased probability of recovery >>> If we treat patients less restrictively, they may recover faster.

    5. 기타

    1) Metadiscourse: Academic writing에서는 first person (I, we)으로만 문장이 나열되는 것을 지양한다.

    • Announce that in what follows: explain, show, argue, claim, deny, describe, suggest, contrast, add, expand, summarize

    • List the parts or steps: first, second, finally

    • Express the logical connections: infer, support, prove, illustrate, therefore, in conclusion, however

    • To hedge: it seems that, perhaps, I believe, probably

    • Dangling modifer가 발생하지 않도록 하기 위해서도!!: To determine ~, monocyte was added....

    2) Noun + Noun + Noun:  Try disassembling

ex) early childhood thought disorder misdiagnosis >>> misdiagonized disordered thought in early childhood (early가 childhood를 꾸미고 있다고 가정하였다.
